In this seminar, we welcome our guest lecturer Ms. Danielle Belko from Facebook and hear from her about the latest research into VR conducted by her company. Ms. Belko is Emerging-Technologies Chair at SIGGRAPH 2020 where the cutting-edge technologies, which haven’t been put into practical use yet, will be demonstrated and exhibited. We also have a moderator Professor Michitaka Hirose, who is known as the pioneer of VR research in Japan, with us and he gives his update on the ongoing research at the University of Tokyo.

    Dani Belko is a Technical Program Manager at Facebook Reality Labs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she works closely with researchers, engineers, and specialists to enable social interactions in virtual environments that are indistinguishable from real life. Creating opportunities for people to connect and interact in meaningful ways has been a main focus in Dani’s work since receiving her Masters degree from Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center. After graduating, Dani worked at Schell Games, a Pittsburgh-based games company that specializes in developing transformational experiences. Additionally, she co-produced a large innovation and music festival that brings thousands of people together to discuss innovative topics, share ideas, and enjoy live performances. She has been involved with ACM’s SIGGRAPH conference for the past 7 years, and is always looking for new ways to bring the world closer together.
  • Michitaka Hirose
    Professor, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo Director, The University of Tokyo Virtual Reality Educational Research Center
    He was born in Kanagawa, in 1954.
    He was graduated from the University of Tokyo, School of Engineering in 1977, and received PhD. degree in 1982. Since then, he has been in various positions such as Associate Professor and Professor at the University of Tokyo. He also served as a president of Virtual Reality Society of Japan.
    His research interests cover Systems Engineering, Human Interface and Virtual Reality. He is known as a pioneer of Japanese Virtual Reality research. He served as a project leader of many national R&D projects such as “Digital Museum”, “Digital Public Art” and “Virtual Museum”.
    He was awarded with various prizes such as Tokyo Techno-Forum Gold Medal Prize, Okawa Publishing Prize etc. He wrote many books such as “Virtual Reality” (Sangyo-Tosho) and “Between Man and Machine” (Iwanami-Shoten).
