Technical details

“fVisiOn” is a novel glasses-free tabletop 3D imaging technology in which virtual 3D objects float on a flat tabletop surface. Since its viewing style is specifically designed for tabletop tasks, it assumes a seated condition. Our principle employs circularly arranged projectors and a conical anisotropic rear-projection screen. This combination generates numerous directional light rays that pass through the tabletop surface and form a light-field of virtual 3D objects’ surfaces. Since it produces horizontal parallax in a circumferential direction, multiple users seated all around the table can view a 3D image from any direction with the appropriately corresponding perspective.
Our latest developed prototype, which is 70-cm tall with a 90-cm diameter, resembles an ordinary round table under which all of the 3D imaging components are installed. It can display full-color, 10-cm-wide, 5-cm-tall real-time 3D animation that can be enjoyed by surrounding audience members standing at a distance of 1–2 meters from the table, since our method is designed to be viewed from above at an angle.
fVisiOn, which has a high affinity with ordinary collaborative activities on tabletops, is appropriate for group discussions and teleconferences using digital documents and virtual mock-ups around tables.

Exhibition content

Our interactive demonstration features “imaginary 3D games,” for example, from manga/graphic novels and science fiction movies. By putting cards in a certain area of a table, the creatures on the cards are summoned to the table as glasses-free 3D images. Multiple people can watch the creatures fight from any direction of 360 degrees around the table. Another card invites the appearance of a virtual diva, standing 5 centimeters tall, who then energetically sings and dances on her stage.
