【Technical details】
General Projection Mapping, which has recently generated much attention as Media Art, typically targets static objects. That's because general projectors have large latency to change projection content, and projection to dynamic objects causes significant misalignment and large discomfort. On the other hand, our system controls an optical axis of the projector at high speed aiming at the dynamic object with high-speed vision and high-speed mirrors. The system enables Dynamic Projection Mapping without misalignment and discomfort caused by the dynamic movement of the object. Moreover, we use retro-reflective material as a background, which provides robust object recognition of high-speed vision against illumination changes, and enables colorful content projection for dynamic objects. Dynamic objects such as sports balls and cars are available for various performance as Projection Mapping screens, such as visualizing a pitched ball as a fire ball. The system is also expected to play a role of visual work support with video content in dynamic real world, such as sports training and manufacturing lines.

We present a Dynamic Projection Mapping system 'Lumipen 2', which can provide various projected images that are fixed on dynamic objects and opens up for new applications such as sports games. The system consists of a high-speed vision, high-speed mirrors to control an optical axis of a projector, and retro-reflective material as a background. When an object moves quickly, the projected content follows it without delay and misalignment, and we can experience Augmented Reality without discomfort caused by the delay.
