【Technical details】
In this demo, we show a novel interactive system that mutually copies adjacent 3D environment optically and physically. The system realizes mutual user interactions through haptics without wearing any equipment. Realistic volumetric image is achieved by using Aerial Imaging Plate (AIP), developed by ASUKANET Co., Ltd, which is composed of tiny mirror array. The AIP reflects objects so as to reconstruct floating aerial object in front of it. Our system can optically copy adjacent environments based on this technology. Haptic feedback is also given by using Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display (AUTD). Converged ultrasound can give force feedback in mid-air. Based on optical characteristic of the AIPs, the coordinate system of the cloned image and the user becomes identical. When a user touches the transferred clone image, the system gives force feedback so that they can feel reality to the floating image. Our system copies not only eeach user but also surrounding environment for mutual interactions.

In this demonstration, users can communicate with an instructor through our system. Users can see that the instructor sitting next to them is copied to user-side and can touch the copied floating image. Moreover, users can push a light-weight ball remotely by using our system.
