Can Japanese content be accepted overseas if it expresses Japanese identity and Japanese domestic matters?
Mamoru Hosoda’s animation movies "Summer Wars" and "the Wolf Children Ame and Yuki" have been praised at many film festivals overseas though they are depicting such purely Japanese matters as relationships in the family and relatives in Japan or the life and scenery in the countryside of Japan.
Kengo Kuma’s architecture let the world know of the Japanese sense architecture, receiving many overseas awards and now requests for him to design architecture are pouring in. Also, his latest work, the New Kabuki Theatre in Tokyo is currently attracting a lot of attention from abroad.
Yoichiro Kawaguchi who has fascinated the world with his CG works is now experimenting collaboration with such Japanese traditional arts as Tsugaru Nuri lacquerware and Kiyomizu Yaki ceramics and his collaborated works with Tsugaru Nuri lacquerware were highly praised at a recent exhibition in Paris.
The three gentlemen who are expressing their unique characters will talk under the theme "Identity and Method of Expression as Japanese Individuals vs. Universality and Internationality."
