The Opect enables the operating surgeon to manipulate the
pre/intra-operative MRI and intraoperative histological data through
intuitive motion. A commercially available gaming controller (KINECT;
Microsoft, Redmond WA) is utilized for motion recognition. The most
significant attribute of this application is its effectiveness in
utilizing the Kinect sensor; this allows the operating surgeons to
maneuver the images without needing to touch any devices or wear
sensors or markers over their sterilized gown and gloves.
Additionally, the Opect was developed with a focus on being user
friendly and its specifications were attained through repeated
feedback from a close collaboration between physicians and engineers.
The Opect therefore effectively assists surgeons in better decision
making, leading to improved surgical procedures.
